** Description changed: There was a recent update to Virtualbox that I installed 2 days ago. See: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/virtualbox/+bug/1435113/comments/17. Now, Virtualbox won't start any VMs. `virtualbox` emits the following warning when started from the command line: === BEGIN === WARNING: The character device /dev/vboxdrv does not exist. Please install the virtualbox-dkms package and the appropriate headers, most likely linux-headers-generic. You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed. === END === The virtualbox-dkms was installed. I removed it and reinstalled it and it didn't fix the problem. If I try and start a VM, I get the following error: === BEGIN === Failed to open a session for the virtual machine ATP Dev WT-ACCES I/O. The virtual machine 'ATP Dev WT-ACCES I/O' has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 1 (0x1). Result Code: NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005) Component: Machine Interface: IMachine {480cf695-2d8d-4256-9c7c-cce4184fa048} === END === There is another dialog that says === BEGIN === VirtualBox - Error in suplibOsinit Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908) The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root. If it is available in your distribution, you should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary. === END === Note that I don't have /etc/init.d/vboxdrv and I haven't been able to find a package that contains it. I quite often remove packages that have security issues if I don't use them. This may have triggered this problem. - I was planning on upgrading to 15.04 but I was going to wait awhile. I - may upgrade sooner to see if it resolves this issue. I can hold off for - a while if that helps you address this issue. Please advise otherwise I - might upgrade in the next few hours. + I was planning on upgrading to 15.04 but I was going to wait awhile. I may upgrade sooner to see if it resolves this issue.
