It would really help if you offer more information on the version of Kopete, Ubuntu and the system you are running? Any specific details about your soundcard? Depending on your desktop environment you could use KInfoCenter (KDE) or Harware Information (GNOME) to provide this. I am using Kopete 0.12.5 (KDE 3.5.7) on Kubuntu Gutsy. My sound card is a Sound Blaster CA0106 (SBLive!) and Kopete sound notifications are working fine.
