Yesterday it did get my attention that the package "linux-generic" wasn't 
installed anymore on my desktop and my kernel was was lagging a few updates 
behind.
Installing the "linux-generic" package it didn't give any problems. Also the 
new kernel that did came along with it was installed without any errors.

The kernel update of today was also preformed without any problem.

So for me the problem seems to be solved with reinstalling the "linux-
generic" package:

$ sudo apt-get install linux-generic
