For the record, this is how to clean up:

  sudo update-r.cd networking remove
  sudo update-r.cd networking defaults

Vincent has the same problem, and he mentioned that he has an
/etc/init.d/networking.dpkg-old; that sounds like ifupdown once failed
to upgrade/configure?
