your final patch seems to solve the problem on my computer. There are
only the following problems:

1) If something (e.g. a window or a menu) overlaps the video it gets blue 
borders (instead of Compiz's shadow) but at least the video works well. I think 
it's acceptable as a result.
2) if I use Totem (totem-xine) the colours of the videoclip are not right (no 
matter which output I choose, e.g. xv, xshm) as described in comment 78. This 
happens every time, no matter if the desktop effects are enabled or disabled. 
The videoclip works well in Kaffeine, Mplayer and Vlc though. 

I hope problem 2 can be solved.

P.S. my card is detected as an Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/940GML
Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [VGA]) and
I'm using the "intel" modesettings driver (instead of "i810") on Gutsy
