Both Thunderbird and Sunbird don't crash while I use the "Glossy" or "Human" desktop theme. I was using the theme called "Crux" when I experienced the crash and can still reproduce it there, so this is probably related to Bug #127092: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gray-theme/+bug/127092
