A reboot certainly isn't necessary; at most 'sudo modprobe -r bcm43xx; sudo modprobe bcm43xx' to unload and reload the driver. Unfortunately we cannot fix this firmware situation properly because we are not legally entitled to distribute the firmware. We have attempted to engage Broadcom in discussion of this and (I'm told) been politely but firmly refused.
