System is Linux Mint. This problem was running 3.16.0-31-generic. Went back to 3.13.0-45-generic and so far the problem has not happened again. If the system remains stable with 3.13.0-45 then I will attempt a prior version of 3.16.0 to see if the problem was introduced by -31.
