Sorry Cristopher, maybe I mix things that are not related, but when I wanted to upgrade my x86 12.04 to HWE Stack, I had to tweak something to prevent the upgrade process to fail because pae feature not exposed by the CPU. This has nothing to do with x86/x64, but instead to that non- pae distribution in no more available since a long time.
