I can confirm the same thing happens on my Toshiba Satellite A200 1GB,
running Kubuntu gutsy. When I press the Fn+Mute keys the on-screen
displays shows "Mute on", but the sound isn't turned off. Right click on
the taskbar icon -> Mute doesn't work either. KMix shows no "Mute"
buttons above the channel volume sliders, nor does alsamixer have the
mute control for any of the channels.

Is there anything we can do? Maybe prodding upstream for an updated ALSA
