Hi Chris, I rather think that it is an issue of the old server not shutting down correctly. What I tried is:
* booting and logging in into XFCE * log out * shutting down the X server -> /etc/init.d/xdm stop * logging in as root into the console (yes, I have a root user) * checking if the old user is still logged in with -> users the answer is root * trying to log into another user fails like described above. But even without any X server running the file /tmp/.X1-lock exists By the way: On my laptop I can choose from two video cards -- this time I tried it with my Intel 915GM card. But I have stille some nvidia packages installed: oxi:~ > dpkg -l|grep -i nvidia rc nvidia-kernel-2.6.15-rc2.051127i 1.0.7667-0ubuntu3+10.00.Custom NVIDIA binary kernel module for Linux 2.6.15-rc2.05112 rc nvidia-kernel-2.6.15-rc2.051127ii 1.0.7667-0ubuntu3+10.00.Custom NVIDIA binary kernel module for Linux 2.6.15-rc2.05112 rc nvidia-kernel-2.6.15-rc2.060206i 1.0.7667-0ubuntu3+10.00.Custom NVIDIA binary kernel module for Linux 2.6.15-rc2.06020 rc nvidia-kernel-2.6.15.1-ubuntu1.tstq 1.0.8178-0ubuntu3+10.00.Custom NVIDIA binary kernel module for Linux 2.6.15.1-ubuntu1 ii nvidia-kernel-common 20051028+1ubuntu7 NVIDIA binary kernel module common files rc nvidia-settings 1.0-3ubuntu7 Tool of configuring the NVIDIA graphics driver ii nvtv 0.4.7-5ubuntu1 tool to control TV chips on NVidia cards under Linux oxi:~ > I hope that does not confuse even more!
