this seems to be fixed.
i did the following.
* clean install of gutsy tribe 5, and updated with update manager.
* went to youtube.com and choose a video.
* firefox showed me the plugin not installed bar.
* I clicked the install missing pluggins. choose adobe flash.
* various packages were installed
* youtube works
