I changed to a different usb mouse and have used computer for more than 15 hours without a lockup.
old bad mouse = Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse (ie exact same mouse as first post in thread) new good mouse = Microsoft Standard Wireless Optical Mouse I used the bad mouse on a different system running Win2k for a day without a lockup -but hard to tell because lockups only occurred after several hours.
