I tried again and noticed the problem was during the grub install. This
made me suspect that a prior external USB stick install I had done had
messed up the boot record thing. I built a liveUsb with BootRepair on it
and used it to fix the boot record. After doing this, Ubuntu booted up OK
from Grub, although since the actual Ubuntu install did not complete, I'm
not sure I got a full and proper installation. I have a laptop with Raid
SSD and hard drive. Grub was installed on /dev/sdc by BootRepair which I
thought was odd since I would expect the boot record on /dev/sda. This was
all done last night so not much test time on it yet. Nevertheless my dual
boot seems to working as expected now.
