I can confirm this problem. I have a dell inspiron 1420 (intel GM965 chipset) preinstalled with fiesty. I wiped it and installed gutsy tribe 5 and my fn+f8 (CRT/LCD) button has no effect. I don't know if this problem happened in fiesty because I never tried using an external monitor. The only way to get an external monitor to work is restart x with the monitor attached. But then you run into problems where the two screens are active simultaneously and have mismatched resolutions. That confuses the window manager among other things. The fn+f8 button should toggle the native and external screens on and off, but it doesn't seem to be working. I don't dual boot another OS so I can't test to see if the problem is hardware or software-based.
I'll attach my xorg.conf if anyone's interested.
