I have quite same problem but without connect anything: with i810 driver (Gutsy) in my laptop, if I try to enter in console (ctrl+alt+F1) I get a blank screen and I cannot return in X neither restart GDM (ctrl+alt+F7 and ctrl+alt+backspace doens't work), I have to connect in ssh and restart the gdm manually (/etc/init.d/gdm restart).
