Sorry for the delay.  This is not a dupe, I'm running Gutsy i386.

I was about to reformat the machine, so I decided to install flashplayer
by hand using Adobe's script (not as  root user).  It worked fine.

Then I wanted to answer your question, so I emptied the contents of
~/.mozilla/plugins

Flash was gone from about:plugins at this point.

Now I reinstalled flashplugin-nonfree, and it's working perfectly (also
at about:plugins)


I am not sure what the issue was.  As a wild guess, perhaps I didn't have _all_ 
firefox windows closed.
