I do regularly update my system (desktop), but only reboot it once every few months. Yesterday I was forced to reboot, and my uptime of 112 days was gone. Upon reboot I ran into the same issue as this ticket describes. Having had my fair share of X11 issues in the past, this issue was non-trivial to fix, and I only managed to do so with the steps ~mlankhorst provided. Somewhat more novice users surely will be at wits end and will probably feel they need to resort to a complete reinstall, or switch to Windows (again) instead.
