Matt, it's true that Linux did and does a lot of things traditional Unices didn't and don't do. But that is neither here nor there and I shouldn't have mentioned this in the first place.
I raised my objections regarding mount by UUID and it's up to you guys to check their validity regarding Ubuntu's goals. As for the problem at hand: I am willing to aid in resolving this issue, so if you want me to test something, let me know about it.
