I had the same probleme ! Computer : Acer Aspire 5024 WLMI (turion) ubuntu version : Edgy Eft knot 2 Can't boot with traditionnal options ...
But the computer boots with these options : acpi=off irqpoll xforcevesa But : i've got a black screen. Gnome seems to open because i can hear the music ... but no image even in safe graphic mode ! So i had to switch for another console and make a dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg with vesa solution ...
