I'd expect to see something like

when connecting the joystick: the first few lines are from the USB core,
and the last three from the input driver.

If you're not seeing any lines with "usb" and a number, there's
something wrong either with your joystick, with your USB port(s), with
your computer's firmware or with the kernel.
