People could try out https://github.com/BlueDragonX/xf86-input-mtrack
and see if they get any mileage out of that. It's generally better than
synaptics if it had proper hysteresis, however, I ran into problems with
defining soft button zones on my clickpad. (It arranged them vertically
as opposed to horizontally.)
