New version of the driver came down this afternoon.  I had to remove
legacy kernal module again and reinstall headers, restricted manager,
etc to even get it to run. Instead of white screen I got a black screen
with mouse pointer. But in safe Gnome mode, I did get a pop up telling
me to disable XGL to create the following file:

~/.config/xserver-xgl/disable.

Adding that file restored the desktop in normal mode with compiz
running.
