Unbelievable... with the xserver-xgl package update that was pushed today, we received the notification as displayed in the attachment to this comment.
In creating ~/.config/xserver-xgl/disable the problem was solved. I suspect the Xgl autostart may have been implemented in a previous package version, which was leading to my issues with mythtv.
