I installed latest driver and then generated a new xorg.conf as described above. I note that previously the monitor had been defined as "default" but now is correctly identified with model number, (This is a desktop system withRadeon 9800 Pro with external TFT screen). MonitorLayout option is DPMS.
Restarted X without problem. I attach the new xorg conf.
