I'm having the same problem on a Thinkpad R51. I've seen some reports elsewhere that people have been able to fix this by disabling mic and line jack sense in kmix or gnome volume controls but I don't appear to have those options in either of them. (I'm running Xubuntu but installed the KDE and Gnome controls to see if they'd work.)
