Yelp search does use "stop words".  Not only that, it also allows
"common suffixes" and "common prefixes".  All these are fully localised
lists and have been used since GNOME 2.16 (Edgy, IIRC).

In addition, we have a "Repeat this search online" feature, which is the online 
integration you speak of.  Generic integration with Google (/ generic online 
search engine) is off the cards for several reasons: 
1. Google is designed for online usage only.  It cannot search you're hard 
drive - that is what Beagle / Tracker are for.
2. Google is a commercial product, something GNOME (as a free desktop) cannot 
depend on.
