I am not sure whether this is a bug in ubuntu per-se.

I had switched off wireless using the side switch, but could never
enable it back via toggling the switch.

Ultimately, i rebooted using "lenovo quick start" (the "QS" button on
the lower right side of the screen), and was simply able to enable wifi
back using the config option. Rebooted back in ubuntu and the wifi was
working fine again.

If you dont have "quick start", you could try booting under windows and
using the fn+f5 to re-enable wifi.
