I updated my BIOS, and tested this with the Ubuntu 14.10 live CD. It
seems much improved. I got 23 Mb/s in Linux vs 33 Mb/s in Windows on
speedtest.net. Obviously that is not the ideal way to test, but my
router doesn't have a speed test mechanism, and both tests were
performed within a couple of minutes of each other.

So it seems it still isn't quite as good as on Windows, but it is far
far better than the ~50 kB/s I was getting previously so I'd say this
can be closed.

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
       Status: Expired => Fix Released
