I think I already figured out what went wrong. I'm using Ubuntu on a
very old laptop with a non PAE Intel CPU. I found a workaround to enable
PAE. For each update I have to use this workaround again, otherwise
Ubuntu sees the CPU as non=PAE and installation fails. So it is not a
problem with Ubuntu but with a non PAE CPU.
