Public bug reported:

I'm attempting to install Kubuntu 7.10 Tribe 5 from the alternate
installation CD. On my system, it fails to detect my CD-ROM drives.

I have an onboard HPT374 (4 IDE ports, driven by the hpt366 module in
the installation system), to which I have connected two hard drives. I
also have an onboard VIA IDE controller, which has my optical drives
connected. The 4 IDE ports on the HPT374 appear to fill the kernel's IDE
table, preventing the VIA from registering; disabling the HPT allows the
CD drives to be detected at the expense of my hard drives.

I've tried to work around this by making the system load the via82cxxx
module first, then the hpt366 module (since I only need two of the four
ports to install), but I cannot work out how to do this. On my current
Gentoo Linux install, I get the following lspci and dmesg output:

$ sudo lspci -vvvv

I'm going to attempt to use debootstrap to install Kubuntu instead; I
believe this bug could be fixed by either switching to libata for PATA
drivers, or changing IDE_MAX_HWIFS to at least 6 (the default is 4, the
limit is 10).
