the 3.17 kernel is not supported by ubuntu 14.04, it is only official for 14.10 (currently in beta testing), to get virtaulbox working you would need to download it from the utopic repos (which may or may not be kernel 3.17 ready just yet) *sits here completely surprised my nvidia drive still works in 3.17rc3 on 14.04*
