reanjr, that's an enticing suggestion. However, if you were using a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse, the result would be that the Bluetooth icon was blue almost all the time, which wouldn't be good. (And it would make you even less likely to notice the messaging icon when it went blue.)
Anyway, I updated the specification back in December to describe what the paired icon should be.
