I went onto the printer and chose "Network services" and disabled all but the 9100 service.
I can now print out. While the problem isn't fixed as such, this should allow me to run this printer for a few more years. At that point it should be ready for the scrap-heap anyway. Perhaps the best course of action is to list this bug as "won't fix"?
