Marc, I have installed another ubuntu 14.04 filesystem onto a USB memory stick and can boot from that, but I cannot retrieve some of my files from the hard drive for backing up before re-installing 14.04 onto the hard disk which will wipe everything on it. Do you have any suggestions of how I might do this? It seems to be a matter of permissions on files and folders which I cannot change as I am not able to su to root without the password.
To give you a better picture of my setup, I have a HP Pavilion dv5 Entertainment Notebook laptop. It has a 320 GB hard drive and an Nvidia GE Force 9200M GS graphics card. I understand it is not a security issue, but there is something in the upgrade scripts which caused this problem and that is what needs to be addressed and remedied. If this was my only pc I would not be able to report the problem to you, so there may be other users out there who are in that position and who require the remedy as well. Regards, Robert.
