The same problem exists with suspend/resume when closing the laptop lid.

By adding "acpi=off" as a kernel boot parameter this avoids the hanging
on suspend/restart/reboot.


For reference I also tried the following, none of which fixed/avoided the 
problem.

- ubuntu 14.10 alpha 2
- ubuntu 13.10
- ubuntu 14.04 with mainline kernel version v3.12.26-trusty and v3.16-utopic
- using suspend shell script described here
