nvidia-glx depends on the virtual "nvidia-kernel-1.0.8762" provides. This is provided by the various linux-restricted-modules. If no linux- restricted-modules is installed, it will just pick the first it finds (2.6.15-23).
If you had "linux-386" installed all would work because linux-386 depends on the latest linux-image-386 and linux-restricted-modules-386.
