I think I'm having the same problem. It started happening shortly after upgrading from 12.04 LTS to 14.04 LTS. There are two user accounts on my system. One works fine. The other experiences this problem - hangs with only background image displayed after login. I've waited a half hour and nothing changes. None of the solutions I've found on the internet work (resetting Unity, reinstalling ubuntu-desktop, etc.) I'm guessing some configuration got borked during the upgrade, but I am no guru and have no idea how to track it down. If there's information I can provide that might help, I'll be happy to do so, but you may have to explain how to get it.
