I have the same symptoms after finally upgrading to trusty a few days ago. When hotplugging or removing an external monitor while in the Unity desktop, the screen image starts blinking a static image within a few seconds. The mouse cursor continues to operate normally.
I only see this under Unity - login screen (lightdm I guess) and GNOME Flashback (with or without Compiz) accept a monitor hotplug perfectly and extend the desktop in the process. Latest Intel's graphics stack performs the same.
