Christopher, I wouldn't remember the details of the upgrades released via
the Ubuntu software center which could be a reason for the touchpad that
worked fine for two months after initial installation of 14.04 to stop
working.

If an upgrade cause this issue and it wasnt entirely a Kernel issue, then a
fresh install of 12.04 or 14.04 should have fixed it if I am not wrong. But
the issue is still persistent.

Which has got me wondering if this a hardware malfunction.
