I believe I have the same problem, was a showstopper for me as well, I
have an Ati X700 PCIE in my laptop. But the screen did not go blank,
but first displayed lots of vertical lines, then lots of horizontal
lines before giving up and displaying a badly mangled X dialog that X
couldn't be started.

anyway, shouldn't safe mode still use vesa drivers instead of ati? The
open source drivers have never really worked for me, and I doubt they
will in the near future.

Can i force the install CD to use the vesa driver? then I'd like to try
it out again, as I'm desperate to use Monodevelop 0.11.
