Public bug reported: I'm using Ubuntu 14.10 dev with apt 1.0.4ubuntu5. On my system I have noticed that the package lists directory (/var/lib/apt/lists) was already over 700 MiB big with ~600 MiB of lists which aren't reachable anymore. Since apt provides the options clean and autoclean to have control about the package cache in /var/cache/apt there could maybe also be an option that deletes all obsolete package lists in /var/lib/apt/lists.
