This sounds very similar to what I'm experiencing on Ubuntu 14.10. Basically, when I login, teh screen goes blank for a moment, then right back to the login. I have reason to believe a recent update made this happen. From what I've been reading, I think it has something to do with the .Xauthority file found at ~/ . I found something similar to what I was experiencing. http://askubuntu.com/questions/367260/i-am-logged-out-immediately-after-logging-in\ Supposedly if I removed ~/.Xauthority (I made a backup) it would be regenerated after lightdm restarts. Well it doesn't, and I'm still stuck in a loop.
