Same problem here on lastest tribe of Gutsy. No XGL on my laptop (Compaq N800W with ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 using the ati driver).
The default resolution of the screen of this laptop is 1400x1050 (and is correctly detected). Compiz doesn't start.
