Workaround! For noobs like me, who just need to get the thing to work
and don't want to root around obscure system settings, this did the
trick: reverting to the Saucy Salamander kernel.

apt-get install linux-image-generic-lts-saucy

... assuming it's in the cache after an upgrade, should be simple.

All the new features in 14.04 seem to work, just stops the eternal
restart process.
