It turns out removing the linux-image-3.2.0-64-generic package (this
also requires to remove linux-image-generic) afterwards gave an error
message and my /vmlinuz file was gone.

Marking the linux-image-3.2.0-63-generic for reinstall in synaptic and
reinstalling it recreated the files and terminated without errors.

Installing linux-image-3.2.0-64-generic afterwards (second attempt)
terminated without filling the disk and without errors except for the
following thing which I cannot make sense of, it seems to be
contradictory:

===
Running depmod.
update-initramfs: deferring update (hook will be called later)
Examining /etc/kernel/postinst.d.
run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/apt-auto-removal 3.2.0-64-generic
/boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-64-generic
run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms 3.2.0-64-generic
/boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-64-generic

: Unable to find an initial ram disk that I know how to handle.
Will not try to make an initrd.
run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/initramfs-tools 3.2.0-64-generic
/boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-64-generic
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-64-generic
