Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and trying to help make
Ubuntu better. However, you are using the Linux Mint distribution and
you are using software packages that are not provided by the official
Ubuntu repositories, namely Oracle Java. Because of this the Ubuntu
project can not support or fix your particular bug.

I believe your question about the Java dependency should be answered by
the answer to the following question:

To duplicate slightly here: yes, the octave package does depend on the
"default-jre-headless" metapackage provided by Ubuntu. If you install
another package not supported by Ubuntu that provides that name but does
not provide the same interface, then Octave is not expected to work
properly.
