In an attempt to add something new to all the reported behavior,: Leftclick on Nautilus launcher minimizes the open window, as expected, if you have any one of the folders under your home directory, with the exception of the Trash directory. If you select Trash from the left side pane, then leftclick on the Nautilus icon in the Launcher opens a new window with Home directory. All other behavior in my case is as reported above. Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, 64 bit. Fresh install.
