Phillip, You know what causes this problem, so you can test for it before the upgrade starts. Wouldn't it be better to put an advisory comment up, warning the user that the system has a legitimate but possibly troublesome configuration? The comment could either fully explain how the trouble arises and what might happen or point to a web- based explanation. After all, leaving a user with a bricked system is not being considerate.
