Since no answer has been found, I went elsewhere, in fact to the support people at "System76.com" There after talking about my problem the gentleman suggested that my problem might be in the /home directory which I had carefully preserved each time an installation was done. So I reunstalled 14.04LTS and changed the name of /home and installed new /home on the SSD
